What does your heart treasure?

What is it that is precious to you?

In many ways, we don’t know what’s important to us until things get difficult.

We don’t know what we treasure until the pressure is on.

Watch Sunday’s sermon “Asking, Seeking & Knocking” from The Secret Place series

In this current season, where is your heart?

Where do your emotions go when it is difficult?

Where does your mind drift when you’re frustrated?

Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭21.

So, where is your heart?

Your heart is located in what you’re treasuring

And, when we go to our secret place with the Lord, it’s there that we begin to see what we are treasuring.

  • For some of us, going to the secret place might be in hoping for an answer to prayer.

  • For others, it might be to receive a needed insight or guidance.

  • For some of us, in that place, we encounter the sweet presence of Jesus.

  • For others, we encounter the frustrating inner voice of our circumstances, our complaints, or our distractions.

Whatever you experience, know that The Secret Place isn’t first and foremost the place to fix your heart issues.

Fixing is just another way to treasure ourselves.

The Secret Place is the place to see what our heart is treasuring and be honest with God.

It’s very simple. Begin where you are.

Perhaps you’re distracted in prayer. Then begin where you are. Pray, “God, I’m so distracted right now. It’s frustrating.”

Or perhaps you’re struggling to discern a decision, pray, “God, it’s just really tough to think You’ll lead me in this situation.”

Then pause. “What’s going on in me, Lord? You know, I want to want to be with you.”

And then be honest, tell Him what’s going on in your heart. Tell him where your treasure is. “I’m treasuring a quick fix, Lord.” Or “Lord, it’s just easier to distract myself than look at that problem in my life.”

Then listen for Him. Listen to your heart.

You’ve now made your distraction or decision or any other area, into an active, honest prayer life.

When you pray this way, almost anything could lead you into your Secret Place.

And remember Jesus’ promise, “When you pray…Your Father who sees in secret will reward you” Matthew 6:6.

May He always become the treasure of all our hearts.
