What Season Is It?

Take a lesson from the fig tree.

From the moment you notice its buds form, the merest hint of green, you know summer’s just around the corner.

So it is with you: When you see all these things, you’ll know he’s at the door.

Don’t take this lightly. I’m not just saying this for some future generation, but for all of you. This age continues until all these things take place. Sky and earth will wear out; my words won’t wear out.
— Matthew 24:32 (MSG)

Springtime.

What tips you off to the beginning of this season?

Is it the abundance of birds and their calls?

Flowers popping up all over the place? Warmer weather, brighter skies, puffier clouds? (is puffier a word?)

What do you enjoy most about the Spring? I like the longer days, the green hillsides and the abundance of newness all around.

Jesus mentioned that we can sense the changing of the seasons by looking at the fig tree (Matt 24:32), after prophesying about the changes on earth that will precede his second coming. In that chapter He teaches that we can have a sense of His return when all of those are fulfilled…but He also mentions that no one knows exactly when that will happen. So we are left to discern the times as well as trust in God’s sovereignty and timing. One thing Jesus makes very clear is to remain faithful the whole time.

Being faithful doesn’t mean being perfect.

It just means staying with Jesus, as we succeed and as we fail.

Keeping at the task…the exciting and at times un-eventful call to cultivating followers of Jesus.

Being faithful to God because He is faithful.

Thank God that He faithfully brings each season to us year after year. Let that remind us of His solid rock character and all the mystery that He brings as well.
