Words Hurt

I am so excited to come and share God’s word with you this Sunday!

I will be discussing one of Jesus’ central messages from Matthew 5:21-26. This section of his famous “Sermon on the Mount” discusses murder, anger, and reconciliation.

Every human heart longs for peace, safety, and security, and we spend much of our time and energy pursuing these things each day.

Jesus expounds and applies the ancient laws given to Moses so that his followers can partake in the “blessed life” of a citizen of the Kingdom of God. This abundant life that Jesus offers in John 10:10 is characterized by right relationship with God and with other human beings in fulfillment of the two greatest commandments of the law.

The first topic that Jesus chooses to discuss is the sixth commandment of the famous Ten Commandments. “You shall not murder.”  Jesus invites his listeners to consider beyond the physical act of murder and the anger that accompanies it, to the hidden motivations of the heart, the soul pollutants that militarize our heart, mind, and actions against another human being.

Jesus directs our attention to the small hidden angers in our hearts and invites us on a journey of reconciling with others in tandem as we pursue a right relationship with God.
