Summertime ‘round here
Summertime!
How do you feel about this season? Some of us jumped at the first chance to get out of town and travel, while others are dealing with the increased traffic of tourists visiting our town. Some of us love this warm weather, while others miss the winter chill and rainy days.
Most of us probably find ourselves somewhere in the middle…enjoying the freedoms and benefits of the summer and enduring the challenges. I love the extra hours of daylight for added recreation and our plants sure grow a lot faster now too. But I’ll admit this heatwave makes my 3-6pm timeslot less enjoyable (no A/C here).
Summer at HSCC has always been unique as well.
I miss the Vacation Bible Adventure that used to happen this time of year and I never really liked the college students being gone for 3 months. I do like the flexibility in how we do the equipping hour (from kids through adult), that has allowed for some creative times together. Potlucks seem more fun (okay—they’re just as good other times of the year), we often do a beach day or two and we even get some out of town visitors at church on occasion.
What will this summer bring us?
Well, we will be sitting at round tables in the sanctuary for one. I’d also like us to gather back in the sanctuary during the normal equipping hour to discuss the message, workshop ideas for church rebuilding and maybe even enjoy some snacks together too. But that’s at church...
What about outside of our Sunday morning gathering?
What about a bunch of informal gatherings in our homes? Walks together in the area forests or ocean front paths? I’ve been seeing bible studies pop up, bike rides after meetings and the students went to serve at the Homeless Garden Project a week or two ago after church. Fantastic.
Let me encourage us to scratch the itch to re-gather.
Yes our church service is ramping back up (keep inviting people!),
But we can also connect in so many other ways.
We need each other.
We need to see each other.
Who comes to mind that needs seeing?
What activity might be better together?
I appreciate the efforts being made in the context that summer time offers better than any season we have.
Enjoy!
